A lawn is only as good as the ground under it. Most tired lawns aren’t short of feed or seed, they’re sitting on compacted, uneven soil that holds water in winter and bakes in summer.
So we start again properly: clear, dig, level, firm and rake, add topsoil where it’s thin, and lay turf grown for gardens rather than verges. A steel or stone edge keeps the shape crisp and saves you edging every week.
How it goes
1
Clear
Old turf and perennial weeds out, the ground dug or rotavated.
2
Level
Levelled, firmed and raked, with topsoil where it's thin.
3
Lay
Turf laid in staggered rows, rolled and watered in the same day.
4
Edge
Steel or stone edges so the lawn keeps its curve.
Questions
Turf or seed?+
Turf gives you a lawn in a fortnight. Seed is cheaper and suits shady or awkward areas, but needs spring or early autumn and a couple of months.
When can we walk on it?+
Lightly after two weeks, normally after four. We'll tell you when to do the first cut.
